Triumph TR4 Dove
The Dové GTR4: a TR4 made into a fastback coupé with two seats for children, built by Harrington of Hove for L. F. Dove of Wimbledon from 1963, with a few GTR4As on the TR4A to 1966. Also written Dove GTR4, and called the Harrington Dove.

In June 1963 Autocar road-tested a TR4 that had been given a fixed roof, a tailgate and two seats for children, "the first of its kind". L. F. Dove Ltd of Kingston Road, Wimbledon, a large Standard-Triumph distributor, sold it as the Dové GTR4, with an accent of its own on the name, and Thomas Harrington Ltd of Hove built it. Ate Up With Motor suggests that the idea may have come from Clifford Harrington, after his firm's fastback version of the Sunbeam Alpine. A few were built on the TR4A, as the GTR4A, and the conversions ended in 1966.source 1source 2source 3
The car
From the windscreen (windshield) forward the Dové is a TR4, with the same doors and much the same rear wings (fenders). Behind them Harrington grafted on a glass-fibre roof and tail, with a large rear window in a tailgate that opens on a recessed catch and stays up on self-locking struts; the TR4's rear lamps and wrap-round bumper stayed as they were. John Bolster of Autosport found the roof about 10 cm (4 in) higher than the TR4's hood (soft top).
Inside, Autocar found two upholstered occasional seats for children, whose backrest folded to make room for luggage, reached only from the left, since the driving seat's back was fixed. There was more sound-deadening than in a TR4, an interior light, which the TR4 lacked, and rear quarter windows that opened. The filler had to move, so Harrington fitted a bigger fuel tank, and the spare wheel, the tools and the starting handle went into a locker under the boot (trunk) floor.
Under the bonnet (hood) nothing changed. The test car had overdrive, wire wheels and many extras, and buyers could have the engine balanced and its cylinder head gas-flowed, by Laystall Engineering or Jack Brabham Motors, as an option; the TR Drivers' Club's article says that overdrive and the balanced engine were standard, but Autocar's price list gives both as extras, and Ate Up With Motor the engine work. Many cars, Ate Up With Motor says, had the lower axle ratio that the TR4 offered with overdrive. Bolster added: "Naturally, the full Triumph guarantee applies to the Dové."

The road tests
Autocar's test car, Road Test No. 1926, was much heavier than the open TR4 the magazine had tested on 5 January 1962, and it showed. It was slower away from rest and over the standing quarter-mile, but quicker at speed: it reached 161 km/h (100 mph) about 3 seconds sooner, and went from 129 to 161 km/h (80 to 100 mph) in top gear in 16.5 seconds, against the open car's 25.4. In direct top the engine's limit held it to about 161 km/h (100 mph), and its best speeds came in overdrive; the specification gives them. Over 1,782 km (1,107 miles) it used fuel at 11.7 litres per 100 km (24.1 mpg, imperial).
The testers found fault with the ride, which lurched over dips, with axle hop, with an exhaust boom at about 2,700 rpm on this first car, which Dove believed it had cured, with wind noise from the frameless windows, with slow wipers and with the lack of a headlamp flasher. Their verdict was plain:
This conversion, exceptionally well carried out for L. F. Dove by Thomas Harrington Ltd., Hove, achieves exactly what it sets out to do, turning an open two-seater into a very practical grand touring coupé for parents and two children.
John Bolster tested a Dové for Autosport in July 1963 and called it "a worthwhile project". He printed the maker's claim that the conversion added only about half a hundredweight; Autocar, which weighed its car against the open TR4, had found much more.source 1source 4source 2

How many Dovés were built?
Fact check
around 55, including perhaps 10 GTR4As

50 or so

Our reading. No source read says that either figure comes from the records of L. F. Dove or of Harrington: the higher is the estimate of the Dové historian Jon Marshall, as Ate Up With Motor reports it, and the TR Drivers' Club gives no source for its own. A lower figure, often repeated, has no source that we have found, and Ate Up With Motor's own verdict is that total Dové production is unknown.source 2source 3
The history of the venture
L. F. Dove was no stranger to the TR. In June 1955 Motor Sport reported that the firm issued comparison folders for the TR2 and had "opened recently the first TR2 Centre". Harrington normally worked for the Rootes Group, and its Harrington Alpine of 1961 was a fastback Sunbeam Alpine; the Dové applied the same idea to the TR4.
The first cars were built by early 1963, Ate Up With Motor writes. The Dové was expensive, nearly £300 more than a TR4 hardtop, Ate Up With Motor notes, and it met competition: the TR Drivers' Club names the MGB GT, and Ate Up With Motor points out that Standard-Triumph had a GT plan of its own, which became the GT6. Harrington's coachbuilding department closed, by Ate Up With Motor's account, while the TR Drivers' Club says Rootes persuaded Harrington to stop. L. F. Dove carried on with a few conversions on the TR4A in 1965 and 1966, and then the Dové came to an end.
