Triumph TR4 Specs

One body, one wheelbase and one standard engine size from 1961 to 1967, on two frames: the TR4, the TR4A with independent rear suspension or a live axle, and the Dové fastback on each, side by side, with what the road tests, the clubs and the specialists recorded.

From the first TR4 of July 1961 to the last TR4A of July 1967 the body, the wheelbase and the size of the standard engine stayed the same. The frame changed once, for the TR4A of 1965, which also brought independent rear suspension, and in North America a TR4A could still be had with the TR4's live axle. L. F. Dove's fastback conversion, the Dové GTR4, was built on both.

The tables set out five specifications side by side: the TR4, the TR4A IRS, the TR4A with its live axle, and the Dové on the TR4 and on the TR4A. Each shows one figure, the reading the sources best support. A small asterisk beside a figure means that another figure is in print, and opens a note with every reading and its source; the "i" beside each table's heading lists the sources for the whole table. The sections below explain what the tables cannot: how the figures were rated and measured, where the sources disagree, and the details that have no row of their own.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5source 6

The engine and its service data

Every TR4, TR4A and Dové has the same engine: a four-cylinder in line, with a cast-iron block and head, pushrod-operated overhead valves, three main bearings and wet cylinder liners of nickel-chrome iron, centrifugally cast. The liners could be changed for smaller ones, and to special order the TR4 had the TR3A's 2-litre engine, for racing in the 2-litre class, with engine numbers prefixed CTA, as the Vintage Triumph Register reads them. A low-compression head was offered for countries with poor fuel.

The TR4 began with twin SU carburettors and changed to Zenith-Stromberg carburettors during 1963; TR4As had both, Strombergs first and SUs again later, from CTC62191 by the Vintage Triumph Register's account or CTC61291 by Revington TR's. Their change points are on the TR4 and TR4A pages.

Rimmer's parts catalogue adds service data that the tables do not hold, and the German TR Register's guide the thermostat:source 2source 6source 4source 7source 8source 1

Power and torque, by rating

The sources rated the TR4's power in two ways, and each figure in the tables carries its rating. Motor Trend gave both in 1961, a net figure and a higher gross one at a slightly higher engine speed, and Motor Sport's road test of 1963 did the same, the net figure in its text and the gross one in its data panel. Figures on different ratings are not directly comparable. Some sources, the TR Drivers' Club and Krause among them, give the gross figure at the net figure's engine speed, which mixes the two ratings.

The TR4A's net figure is better attested than its gross one, which only Ate Up With Motor gives, and the engine speed of its peak is not settled: the German TR Register's guide and the TR Drivers' Club disagree. The German guide prints its torque figures in newton-metres where the numbers are plainly pound-feet; the tables give them in pound-feet.source 3source 4source 9source 10source 11source 6source 12

Transmission

The gearbox (transmission) has four speeds, all with synchromesh, in an aluminium casing with an integral bellhousing. Laycock de Normanville overdrive was an option on the three upper gears. The tables give the gearbox's own ratios; Motor Sport's test car of 1963 had overall ratios of 6.09, 4.02 and 3.04 to 1 in overdrive second, third and top on the standard axle.

The standard final drive is in the tables. A 4.1 to 1 axle was offered with overdrive only, yet the two overdrive cars tested in 1963, Motor Sport's TR4 and Autocar's Dové, kept the standard one. The clutch is a single dry plate, worked hydraulically, and the American TR4A had a diaphragm clutch of 21.6 cm (8½ in).

Rimmer gives the oils: 1.13 litres (2 imperial pints) in a gearbox without overdrive and 2 litres (3½ pints) with it; 0.8 litres (1½ pints) in a live axle and 1.42 litres (2½ pints) in the TR4A's independent rear axle.source 2source 6source 4source 5source 11source 13source 1

Chassis, steering, suspension, brakes and wheels

The TR4's frame is a box-section ladder frame with cross-bracing, the TR3A's widened at the front; the TR4A's is new, and the live-axle TR4A uses the same new frame. Steering is by rack and pinion, through a collapsible column adjustable for reach; Motor Sport counted 2½ turns from lock to lock in 1961 and 2⅔ in 1963, and the TR4A's steering was geared about a fifth slower. The turning circle is about 10 m (33 ft), by Motor Trend's and Autosport's measures.

At the front are unequal double wishbones and coil springs, with telescopic dampers inside the springs, a ball joint at the top and a trunnion at the bottom. At the back the TR4 has a live axle on leaf springs with lever-arm dampers, which Motor Trend in 1961 wrongly called telescopic. The TR4A IRS has semi-trailing aluminium arms, coil springs and lever-arm dampers set crosswise, though the importer's newsletter of 1965 listed telescopic ones.

The brakes are Girling, discs at the front and drums at the back, with smaller, lighter Girling 16P front calipers from CT4388 on cars with disc wheels and CT4690 on cars with wire wheels, by the TR Drivers' Club's account. The tracks differ from car to car:

On wire wheels each of the TR4's tracks was 2.5 cm (1 in) wider, Car and Driver reported. Rimmer gives the tyre pressures as 1.4 bar (20 psi) front and 1.7 bar (24 psi) rear for cross-ply tyres, and 1.7 and 1.9 bar (24 and 28 psi) for radials.source 6source 2source 3source 14source 15source 4source 7source 11source 13source 1

Dimensions and weights

The wheelbase never changed. Most road tests give a longer length than the factory's; Ate Up With Motor presumes that the tests measured over the overriders (bumper guards).

Weights differ most, because the sources weighed different things. The factory's own figure, printed in the importer's newsletter at the American launch, is a dry weight; Motor Trend weighed its car with fuel, oil and water; Motor Sport gave the kerb weight of its hardtop car; Car and Driver's data of 1964 gave a weight and its front-to-rear split; and the German TR Register's guide gives kerb weights with no more said. Each figure has its scope in its note. The factory's figures, as Ate Up With Motor quotes them, make the TR4A about 50 kg (112 lb) heavier than the TR4, yet the German guide gives the TR4A the lower kerb weight of the two; no source read explains the difference. The commission plate also states a gross laden weight, the Vintage Triumph Register notes.source 11source 3source 4source 16source 17source 6source 10source 18

Performance, test by test

Every speed and time in the tables is either a road test's measurement or a maker's claim, and its note says which, with the car and the gear. The makers claimed a top speed and a time to 97 km/h (60 mph) in September 1961. Motor Trend's timed speed was a one-way run by a pre-production open car in overdrive top; Motor Sport's was the "absolute" top speed of a hardtop car with overdrive; Road & Track's time to 97 km/h (60 mph), in 1962, is known through the Vintage Triumph Register; and Car and Driver's data of 1964 gave its speed in direct top and in overdrive separately. A lower set of figures, printed by the TR Register and by Krause, names no test at all, and the road tests explain where it probably comes from.

Motor Trend reached 80 km/h (50 mph) from rest in about 7.5 seconds and went from 48 to 80 km/h (30 to 50 mph) in top gear in 7.7; Motor Sport reached 113 km/h (70 mph) in 16.5 seconds; and Autocar's open TR4 of January 1962 took 25.4 seconds from 129 to 161 km/h (80 to 100 mph) in top. For the TR4A the sources read have no full test, only the maker's claims in its advertising of 1966 and Krause's judgement that it was a little slower than the TR4.source 15source 3source 18source 4source 16source 19source 5source 20

The TR4A with a live axle

The live-axle TR4A differs from the TR4A IRS only behind the seats: in place of the bridge and the trailing arms it has a live axle on leaf springs, on brackets added to the new frame, with lever-arm dampers. The German TR Register's guide gives it a rear track 1 cm narrower; it takes less oil in the axle; from about CT70000 its exhaust had one silencer, mounted crosswise; and Krause gives it a lower weight.source 8source 6source 1source 21source 10

The Dové GTR4

The Dové is a TR4 or TR4A from the windscreen (windshield) forward, mechanically unchanged, so its columns follow the base cars'. What differs is behind the doors: a glass-fibre roof that stands taller than the TR4's hood (soft top), and a bigger fuel tank, whose stated size John Bolster of Autosport doubted. The Dové's weight gain was far above the maker's claim, and the note to the tables gives Autocar's figure with what it was measured against.source 5source 22source 23

Colours and trim

No source read gives a factory colour list for either car. The Vintage Triumph Register names only families of colour for the TR4, and six colours were announced for its American launch, Signal Red and Powder Blue among them. The commission plate carries the codes for paint and trim from 1963 on. Rimmer explains the system: Triumph's paint codes are numbers grouped by basic colour, Signal Red being 32, and a trim code's prefix shows the material, H for leather and C for cloth, with none for leathercloth.

The seats were trimmed in PVC leathercloth as standard, with leather an option; American TR4As came with leather seats and carpet. The Vintage Triumph Register notes that a TR4's floor had a black rubber mat in front and charcoal loop-pile carpet behind the seats, the only colour offered.source 18source 24source 2source 13source 17
