Triumph TR4 Books and Sources

The magazines, newsletters, club guides, histories and results tables behind every page of this site, with what each is good for and how far to trust it.

The TR4's own paper trail begins in September 1961, with Motor Sport's description of the new car and a special TR-4 issue of the newsletter that Standard-Triumph's American company published for its owners' club. From there the sources behind this site run through road tests, rally reports and racing results to the clubs' guides and the histories written since. Every source the pages cite is in the list below, once, with its address printed as plain text; each page also ends with a list of the sources it uses.source 1source 2

How the sources are graded

The label beside each source in the list grades the kind of source it is, not every line in it. Primary sources were made at the time, by the maker or by people who were there: Standard-Triumph's advertisements, the magazines' road tests and reports, the American importer's owners' newsletter, which was partisan but written as things happened, and a Dutch press agency's photograph of 1964. Reference sources are later work done with care: the clubs' guides, a specialist's notes, a parts supplier's catalogue, cited only for what it states, the historians' books and articles, and later interviews and recollections by people who were there, which are memories, not records. Database sources, racingsportscars' results above all, are read one entry at a time.

Unchecked sources are leads, such as a dealer's page about a car for sale or an insurer's news story. A page uses one only beside a stronger source, or by naming it in the sentence.source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9source 10source 11source 12source 13

Magazines and newsletters of the time

Motor Sport's archive is the backbone of the period record: its first description of the TR4 in September 1961, its road test of a TR4 hardtop in January 1963, its reports of the works team's rallies, its show reports and its readers' letters into 1970. Car and Driver's technical report of October 1961 explains what Triumph changed from the TR3A, and its account of Kas Kastner's racing TR4A in February 1966 is the fullest description of that car read for this site. Motor Trend's report of December 1961, Gregor Grant's test for Autosport in September 1962, and the two tests of the Dové in 1963, by Autocar and by John Bolster for Autosport, complete the period tests read in full, with Road & Track's report of December 1966 on a near-standard TR4A. The road tests page indexes the rest, from The Autocar's launch description to Road & Track's survey of owners in 1969; some 20 of them are known only by their titles and pages.

The importer's own newsletter, the TSOA Newsletter, written in New York for the Triumph Sports Owners Association, follows the TR4 in America issue by issue: its prices, the Sebring races, the SCCA seasons, the TR4A's arrival and the drivers whose expenses the company paid.source 1source 4source 14source 15source 16source 17source 18source 19source 20source 21source 22source 23source 24source 25source 26

The maker's numbers and the clubs

For production figures and commission numbers the pages lean on Rimmer Bros' TR2–TR250 parts catalogue, whose introductory pages hold Graham Robson's essay on the cars, the production table by model and market, and the first and last commission numbers of each year, with the dates they were built. The clubs add the detail: the TR Register's buyers' guide to the TR4 and TR4A, the TR Drivers' Club's notes and magazine articles, Bruno Dwinger's guide of 2009 for TR-Register Deutschland, and the Vintage Triumph Register's TR4 and TR4A pages, which follow Bill Piggott for their numbers. Revington TR's lists of running changes, and the British Motor Museum's Heritage Certificates, taken from the factory's build records, complete the means of identifying a car.source 27source 7source 28source 29source 30source 31source 32source 8source 33source 34

Histories and later accounts

The most used later history is Aaron Severson's account of the TR4 and TR4A on Ate Up With Motor, of 2012, which names its sources in its notes. G. William Krause's The Illustrated History of Triumph Sports and Racing Cars (2017) is cited from its chapter on the TR4 and the prototypes before it, with its quotations from period tests; Ian Nicholls's Rover-Triumph story for AROnline, which draws on the board's minutes, gives the money and the takeover; and Julian Balme's article of 2021 for Classic & Sports Car on the works team quotes Graham Robson, who ran it. Robson's own article on Harry Webster in Moss Motoring, the profiles of Kas Kastner and Bob Tullius there, and of Kastner in Road & Track, and racingsportscars' tables, race by race, give the people and the results.source 35source 36source 37source 38source 39source 40source 41source 9source 42
